India claimed the series against England as spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made light work of the tourists to win the fourth Test by a crushing innings and 36 runs.

Ashwin and India needed less than an hour to bowl out England for 195 on the fifth and final day in Mumbai, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead on Monday.

It was only a matter of when and not if for India as England started the day trailing by 49 runs with only four wickets in hand, and the hosts wrapped up victory in a canter, Ashwin leaving his opponents in a spin with all four wickets.

Ashwin’s second-inning figures of 6-55 meant he finished the Test match with 12 wickets.

After a day of records on Sunday, India showed no mercy as Jonathan Bairstow fell victim to Ashwin’s ‘carrom ball’.

Ashwin delivered a magnificent delivery, pressing Bairstow onto his back foot and trapping the batsman LBW. The Englishman immediately appealed the decision but the review showed the ball pitching in line.

Bairstow’s dismissal for 51 triggered a flurry of wickets as Ashwin wreaked havoc.

Chris Woakes (0) followed his team-mate to the pavilion after he was bowled by Ashwin, who lured his victim into an attempted drive.

Two overs later and Adil Rashid (2) flicked a ball into the air and straight to Rahul to complete Ashwin’s five-wicket haul before the latter put England out of their misery by taking the wicket of James Anderson (2).
