Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy said the club is set for an emotional return to footy in 2017, when the host of banned players don the red and black guernsey again for their Round 1 blockbuster against Hawthorn.

Sheedy declared it will be an “outright war” against their fierce rival, with the long history of tension between the clubs set to add another chapter.

“There’s no love between the two clubs,” Sheedy told EON Sports Radio’s The Morning Rush.

“Hawthorn have been up there and done so well and Essendon has been down the bottom end of the ladder and has been through a hell of a lot.

“It’s got an enormous amount of excitement and theatre and I’m really looking forward to it.”
